Seasoned healthcare administrator brings expertise and experience to Rutherfordton
Rutherford Regional Health System (RRHS), a Duke LifePoint Healthcare facility, named James Atkins as chief executive officer (CEO) of the hospital, February 8, 2016. Atkins brings more than 25 years of healthcare experience to the region, most recently serving as chief operating officer (COO) of LifePoint Health’s Rockdale Medical Center in Conyers, Ga.
A seasoned healthcare administrator, Atkins has served on the leadership team at Rockdale Medical Center since 2001 in various capacities, including COO, assistant administrator, senior director of pharmacy and physician relations, and director of pharmacy. During his tenure at Rockdale, Atkins recruited dozens of physicians and expanded the hospitals’ specialty services. He also managed a $5 million neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) renovation and expansion project and helped develop and launch a surgical robotics program. In 2014, Atkins served as interim CEO for another LifePoint Health facility, Bolivar Medical Center in Cleveland, Miss., and successfully guided the hospital in its transition to new leadership.

Atkins earned his Doctor of Pharmacy and Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from the University of Georgia and his MBA from Clayton State University. He has served in various leadership roles for several healthcare organizations in Georgia and is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives.
