Given the long-running popularity of Lake Lure’s New Year’s Day Polar Plunge, a necessary change in venue isn’t diminishing the high level of enthusiasm for this annual tradition.
Event organizers with the Hickory Nut Gorge Chamber of Commerce have recently announced that the 9th Annual Event will be moved to the pool at the 1927 Lake Lure Inn and Spa.
Unavoidable repairs that must be made over the winter at Lake Lure’s Hydroelectric Dam mean that the lake will be drawn down eight feet or more, resulting in the need to relocate the event from the beach to the pool.
This will be the second such time the event has been held there. That’s because the Town of Lake Lure routinely draws down the lake every three years to manage siltation into the lake. However, the unexpected repair needs at the dam prompted the unscheduled drawdown.
“We’ve had the event at the beach, and we’ve had it at the pool,” said Kat Canant, one of the event’s volunteer organizers. “Honestly, we get a tremendous turnout and everyone has lot of fun no matter where it is,” she said.

If you’re planning to go:

– There is no pre-registration. Day-of registration will be from 10 am – 11:30 am
– The registration fee: $20 per person. NOTE: This is a charitable event. Proceeds benefit The Chamber of Hickory Nut Gorge and Hickory Nut Gorge First Responders.
– The Plunge begins at Noon

Lake Lure Mayor Bob Keith and a team of guest judges will grant the coveted Best Costume award. Other prizes for the oldest and youngest plunger, as well as furthest distance traveled, will also be awarded.

Plan to stay for a gathering by the fire pits following the Plunge.
