Mountains Branch Librarian

Read. Connect. Explore. Share. These four  “action words” are the goals and priorities of the Rutherford County Library Systerm and Mountains Branch Library. This spring and summer we will be offering even more programs and services that help our patrons succeed at all four.

This  March we began offering  “Friday Lunch & Learn @ the Library”. Lunch & Learn takes place each first through fourth Friday at noon. Featuring a different speaker each week, this is an opportunity to share a meal, socialize, be informed, enlightened and entertained.  Attendees can bring their own bag lunch to enjoy during the program, with drinks and dessert provided by the library.

May will feature programs from Hospice of Rutherford County, Vaya Health in Asheville, and a discussion of GMOs in the foods we eat.

Lunch & Learn will skip Friday, May 12th as the Friends of the Library once again hold their Big Book & Bake Sale! This is your chance to shop an amazing selection of like-new bestsellers, rare books, children’s books, DVDs, and lots and lots of cook books! Wait…..did that sound like a bad television commercial for mattresses? Then let me add that you can’t beat our low, low prices! Recent best sellers in like-new condition will be marked $3. Other hardbacks are $1, paperbacks are a quarter and DVDs are $1. You can also  pick up something yummy with which to enjoy your new treasures. We’ll be selling homemade baked goods and coffee, too! Book Sale hours are Thursday, May 11th and Friday, May 12th from 9-5, and Saturday, May 13th from 13-3.

The Mountains Branch Friends of the Library will help you Read, Connect, Explore and Share when they bring North Carolina-author, Kristy Woodson Harvery,  to our area for their May 2nd  Books & Bites at the historic Lake Lure Inn. Bestselling author, Elin Hilderbrand has  called Harvey, “the next major voice in Southern fiction”. Her first two books – Dear Carolina,  and Lies and Other Acts of Love – won Harvey lots of enthusiastic new readers.  Her latest book, Slightly South of Simple – the first in her new Peachtree Bluff Series – chronicles the Southern journeys of three sisters and their mother and is sure to gain her many new fans.

Books & Bites takes place Tuesday, May 2nd from 11:30 to 1:00 at the Lake Lure Inn. Tickets are $25 and all proceeds go to support Mountains Branch Library. You may register by stopping by or call the library at 287-6392.

And finally, we are pleased to officially welcome new library-card owner, Raylan Connor to our ranks. Raylan turned 5 in March and the first thing he wanted to do was get his very own library card. Raylan has been visiting the library for each of his five years, and the Connor family are big advocates of early childhood literacy.

Don’t forget to sign up for our 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program and the Rutherford County Summer Reading programs for all ages this June!
