When I arrived as LLCA-CFA’s new director May, 2016 I was immediately captivated by the entire school community’s belief that this school met an essential and vital need. The sense of community and common purpose was clearly part of Lake Lure Classical Academy’s DNA.
The vision of the school’s founders was simple-build a K-12 school whereby families and students had a local choice for a first class education. This vision turned into reality with the opening of the temporary campus in the Fall of 2010 and blossomed with the construction of our beautiful, purpose built K-12 campus on Island Creek Road. A lot of blood, sweat, tears and joy!
Two other traits stand out that distinguish our students, teachers, staff and parents: grit and resilience. Those who have stayed the course are reaping the rewards and recognition so well deserved. First off LLCA-CFA has earned a B grade on the NC School Report Card-no small feat as we also were recognized for Exceeding Expected Growth. Our students and staff truly rolled up their sleeves and worked hard to achieve this milestone- grit and resilience exemplified!
Another example which I believe is very telling of the character of our students, faculty and parents is how we have managed, dealt with, and excelled without a gymnasium. I have seen our students and teachers manage Physical Education class with challenging weather, hot, cold, wet and snow without a complaint. I have watched our teams practice basketball and volleyball on many a windy, cold day on our outside court – never a complaint or excuse. I have watched as our students hop onto buses to travel miles for a “home game”. The joy of being with team mates playing a sport you love was all they needed – never a whine or grumbling. To me the attitude of our athletes, coaches and all students is something we would all do well to emulate. Their approach, camaraderie and spirit simply make those around them want to do better.
Let’s not forget the arts. LLCA-CFA has a fantastic music and drama program. Our student actors and musicians likewise do not have a local forum to present their productions. Like our athletes they travel miles for play rehearsals and performances. Our music teachers must rent other spaces for performances and lack a proper practice venue. Again, never a complaint and always a can do attitude. There are valuable life lessons being taught and learned.
Through the diligence of our Lake Lure Board of Directors and others our students will soon see the ground being broken for a gymnatorium. This will give our school and the Lake Lure Community a building that will not only have a regulation basketball hardwood court but a stage for theater, music, meeting and guest speakers.
The dream is that this gymnatorium will put Lake Lure Classical Academy as a true centerpiece for community events. As we work through the final details of the U.S.D.A. loan we will keep the community updated on progress. I know without a doubt that when this project is completed, the community will see tremendous benefit.
The USDA loan will take care of the building, and we will still have needs to complete the project. In the very near future we will let the community know details of our fund raising to complete the interior of the building. Things like curtains for the stage, theater lighting, bleachers, chairs for productions, scoreboards, gymnastic pads, weights for the weight room, gym divider are just a few items needed.
