Though spring has sprung and there is so much going on at your Mountains Branch Library, let’s not forget what has happened while we were shivering in January and February!

We thank Maria Davis from the main county library for helping us kick off our Healthy Eating in the New Year series with a delicious Burrito Bowl. In February we tried healthy Asian fare with Thai Lettuce Wraps – Please join us Thursday, March 29th at 5:00 when we attempt Super Healthy Vegan Black Bean Burgers!

Also in January we were thrilled with the large turnout for our History Alive! – Sacajawea program. Presenter Mary Dailey brought this remarkable historic figure’s story to life in costume, sharing unknown details of Sacagawea’s journey. We were excited to have the American Heritage Girls from Lake Lure Baptist Church join us, as they were working on their Sacajawea badges!

Mountains Branch Library was honored to host Quilts of Valor in February for their National Foundation Sew Day. We’ve thoroughly enjoyed our Coffee & Conversation sessions with local therapist and Breeze contributor, Mary Reitano. On February 28th, in honor of the month of Cupid, we discussed “Relationship Tune-Ups”, with tips all of us can use for all of our relationships. On March 28th, our topic will be “Successfully Single Again”, and ways to enjoy life as a single person.

Every year Mountains Branch Library participates in “Read Across America”, a national initiative to embrace and celebrate literacy. This takes place on March 2nd, which also happens to be the birthday of the great Dr. Seuss. On Saturday, March 3rd, from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m., we will once again throw a big Green Eggs & Ham birthday party to celebrate. We’ll make a Seuss craft, share Seuss stories and dine on delicious Green Eggs & Ham. The program is for children ages 3 – 10, and preregistration is required. Come by the library or call 287-6392 to sign up.

Our theme for the April 18th Coffee & Conversation will be “Embracing Joy”. Coffee & Conversation takes place each month from 3:00 – 4:30. Refreshments are served.

All of the above would not be possible were it not for the financial support of the Friends of the Mountains Branch Library. The Friends support your library through volunteerism, promotion and fundraising for programs, materials, equipment, and literacy initiatives. Just a few of the initiatives the Friends have funded in recent years are: remodeling the Children’s Area, Eclipse programming and other major programs, a new safe for the library, new blinds for the windows, DVD shelving, landscaping and many, many more.

The Friends are currently streamlining their renewal process with a two-month membership drive which began in February and continues through March. They are asking that all current members renew their membership, and anyone who is not a member, please consider joining! Of course, if you are already a Lifetime Member, or have already renewed for 2018, “Thank You”! You do not need to renew again.

You can renew or join the Friends of the Library for as little as $15 for an Individual Annual Membership, $30 for a Family Annual Membership.  Or you may choose to become an Individual Lifetime Member for $100, or a Family Lifetime Member for $150.

The Friends biggest fundraiser throughout the year is the fantastic Book & Bites author events held at the Lake Lure Inn. On Tuesday, March 20th at 11:00 a.m., the Books & Bites featured book will be “Mr. Owita’s Guide to Gardening – How I Learned the Unexpected Joy of a Green Thumb and an Open Heart.” Sadly, author Carol Wall passed away before her incredible story of friendship with her Kenyan gardener, Giles Owita, was published. Thankfully, her story continues through the efforts of her family. Carol’s husband, Richard Wall will be the featured speaker at the March Books & Bites.

For a $25 donation to the Friends of the Library, you can enjoy a lively book talk and a delicious 3-course lunch. Usher in the gardening season by wearing your best Spring Bonnet. Prize awarded for the best hat. (Millinery fashion is completely optional).

Tickets should be purchased in advance at the library. Checks made payable to “Friends of the Mountains Branch Library” can be mailed to the library at 150 Bill’s Creek Rd., Lake Lure, NC 28746.
