So often, the choices we make determine the outcome. So welcome to all you who have chosen to be here this summer at the lake or in the mountains that surround us. You have made a very good choice! “USA Today” has recently named Lake Lure as one of the top ten lake towns in America! I hope your fun filled plans reach beyond your expectations.
Our Breeze cover title, “Stars of Sumer” does not only refer to those in the heavens but to those participating in two exciting events that take place in our Hickory Nut Gorge community every August. The Lake Lure Olympiad and Dirty Dancing Festival attract hundreds of competitors and fans from across the country. They are the stars of summer. “Your voice” columnist, Bob Keith writes in detail about each event on page 15, and our Rutherford County calendar, page 47, includes them both as well.
In this land of waterfalls and hiking trails, read about three nearby on page 10. After a time of fits and starts, Chimney Rock State Park’s elevator can now whisk you to the top of Chimney Rock – see that story on page 20. Find out about lake ‘turnover’ on page 33. What shouldn’t you plant in your garden? Those invasive plants are identified on page 28. Find what fish are biting, page 34. Have a headache? Turn to “Health matters” page 39. The new Town Budget is passed – see page 5. Believe it or not, school is about to begin – you’ll find Lake Lure Classical Academy news on page 9. These are just a few themes that may encourage you to page through this entire August edition of The Mountain Breeze.
Thank you for making the choice to be here. Your very presence and participation in what this community has to offer makes you a star!
“Hold the torch of courage high, run the race to the end.
For victory’s the prize and endurance shall win.
Set the course to find your dream, and be bold, be committed
To reach up for the stars, and be proud of who you are.
Be a winner, be a star! Be proud of who you are!”
(Olympiad Hymn “Torch of Courage”, 2006 D. Leestma)
