It’s November and you’re thinking cozy thoughts of pumpkin spice and sweaters, right? Hopefully, by the time this edition of the Breeze hits the newsstands, we will be seeing some spectacular fall foliage, though it is a little late this year.
We hope you are also thinking about a big event that occurs on the second Tuesday of November. Election Day. Please remember to exercise this precious privilege and cast your vote on November 9. Mountains Branch Library, located at 150 Bill’s Creek Road, serves as the polling place for the Chimney Rock precinct of Rutherford County. If you have any questions about voting, please contact the library at (828) 287-6417 or the Rutherford County Board of Elections at (828) 287-6030. Or visit their website at https://www.rutherfordcountync.gov/departments/board_of_elections.
If you need assistance getting to the polls, please call the library and we will do our best to find transportation for you.
It is hard to believe that two years ago in November, our community was threatened by what came to be known as The Party Rock Fire. This November, local author, Rose Senehi and the Friends of the Mountains Branch Library will commemorate that historic event with a Books & Bites book launch at the Lake Lure Inn Beach Pavilion. The book launch and luncheon will take place Friday, November 2 at 11:00 am.
Senehi will discuss her latest book, “Catching Fire”, a fictional account of the men and women who tirelessly battled the blaze and kept it from destroying much of the Hickory Nut Gorge community.
“When I began this novel,” says Senehi, “the fire was going to be a secondary plot line. However, once I started interviewing the Forest Service folks and the fire chiefs, their bravery became the real story of the fire.”
Honored at the Books & Bites luncheon are fire chiefs from the communities of Lake Lure, Chimney Rock, Bat Cave, Bill’s Creek, Fairfield Mountains and Broad River, as well as three NC Forest Service rangers. Tickets for the event are $25, half of which goes to the Friends of the Library to support the library. Please call Mountains Branch at 287-6392 to reserve your space.
We are excited to offer three fun and educational children’s programs this month.
Up first, on November 1, we will be “Building and Flying Amazing Aircraft” as part of our MakerKids Club. This STEM oriented program is appropriate for kids 8 and above and meets on the first Thursday of each month at 4:00 p.m.
We are also thrilled to offer free children’s Art Lessons on the first and third Wednesday of each month at 2:00 p.m. Art educator, Aditi Watson allows children 4 and older to express their creativity with projects like painting Van Gough sunflowers, creating tissue paper collages, and molding a fruit bowl with modeling clay. November classes take place Wednesday, November 7 and November 21 at 2:00 p.m.
Kidsenses Interactive Children’s Museum pays us a visit on Thursday, November 8 when they bring “Science Shenanigans” to the library. This fast-paced program uses demonstrations to bring science and chemistry alive. All ages welcome but best for Grades K-8.
Finally, the staff and volunteers at Mountains Branch Library wish all our friends and neighbors the warmest of holidays. We hope you will stop by and visit us and check out some great books to enjoy over the holidays!
