Her true love for animals inspired her to establish The Humane Society Thrift Store in order to provide badly needed funds for the Rutherfordton County Humane Society.  Lil’s reputation for her love of animals was so well-known that her neighbors, Keith and Terry Ullrich, who were in the process of selling their home, asked Lil if she would like all their furniture to sell for the Humane Society. They had a fully furnished home in Florida and did not need it. She said “yes” and immediately asked Tommy Hartzog if she could store the furniture in his vacant building on Buffalo Creek Rd here in Lake Lure.  He said “yes,” so they moved the things inside and had several yard sales. Things went so well that she rented the building from Tommy and officially started the Thrift Shop in the summer of 2013.  She immediately started asking friends, neighbors and residents of Bald Mountain Resort to donate goods for sale in the shop, and to donate time as volunteers.  She said she “was overwhelmed with all the love and support she and the shop received.” Due to health reasons, Lil had to move back to Ohio.  In November of 2017, a Christmas party and fundraiser was held and the shop was renamed “Lil’s Place”, in her honor.  This year there will be another Christmas Party Fundraiser and “silent” auction.  As usual, there will be appetizers and wine.  The event will be on Tuesday, November 27, 2018 from 5 – 8 PM.
