Happy spring! Have we ever been so happy that a rodent was unable to see his shadow and thus forecast the weather? It’s been a long, cold, wet winter and we are ready for some sun and fun!

The Friends of the Mountains Branch Library are celebrating spring with the announcement of their 2019 Books & Bites schedule. Books & Bites is a series of author events and luncheons hosted by the Friends of the Library and the Lake Lure Inn. The events raise funds for Mountains Branch Library and help with programming, book and DVD purchases, and facility improvements.

Tickets for Books & Bites are available at Mountains Branch Library. The donation of $25 includes a wonderful buffet lunch provided by the Lake Lure Inn chefs. This year the Friends host five special authors for lunch and lively book discussion. The season gets underway Thursday, April 4at 11:00 am with author, Kimmery Martin.

Martin, who is also an ER doctor in Charlotte, will share a unique perspective on her writing career. Her debut novel, Queen of Hearts, uses  Martin’s medical background as the backdrop for a story of two women who shared the intensity of medical school and have remained friends ever since. Now wives, mothers and successful doctors, their lives in Charlotte are chaotic and happy, until the return of a former colleague unearths a secret one of them has been harboring for years.

Queen of Hearts has been named one of Real Simple’s “Best Books of 2018” and a Most Anticipated Book of 2018 by Southern Living, Elite Daily, and Writer’s Digest.

Our little community is indeed fortunate to host these nationally recognized, best-selling authors. Some of our writers are visiting Lake Lure for the first time, while others keep coming back to our little piece of paradise. And while it may feel like a vacation for them, these are real-life working writers. They make their living selling books. So we would love to see lots of books sold during the event! Please consider purchasing your book at the Inn and having it personalized by the author. Not only will you have a special keepsake, you will help insure that the Friends of the Library continue to host first-rate speakers.

Other featured authors include:

Michelle Gable – “The Summer I Met Jack”, Tuesday, May 21

Johnathan Putnam – “A House Divided”, Tuesday, July 9

Mary Alice Monroe – “The Summer Guests”, Wednesday, August 21

and best-selling author Karen White – “The Christmas Spirits on Tradd Street”, date to be confirmed.

And hey guys, these events are definitely not just for the ladies! You’re missing out on all the fun, not to mention good food. We’re sure you’ll be particularly intrigued by new historical fiction involving Jack Kennedy and Abraham Lincoln!

On Tuesday, March 26th we look forward to another visit from our partners at the North Carolina Arboretum when ecoEXPLORE brings their spring botany program to Mountains. Kids will examine plants under a microscope, study plant artifacts like twigs and “tree cookies,” learn more about the ecoEXPLORE program, and take a walk to practice taking plant photos. The program begins at 4:00 p.m.

And please make sure your plans for spring include a visit to the library to experience our Starlab Portable Planetarium! In recognition of the 50th Anniversary of man’s first steps on the moon, Rutherford County Libraries will host this amazing solar experience at each of our libraries. Starlab will be at Mountains Branch Library the week of April 15 – 19. This is an interactive learning experience and allows library staff an opportunity to guide visitors through the galaxies. Please make sure your children experience this adventure!

Finally, don’t forget our other regular monthly programs like Genealogy Club, Book Club, MakerKids, Healthy Eating and Kids’ Art Lessons! Our events can be followed on our Rutherford County web page,, or on our library Facebook page at And please make sure to follow our Friends of the Mountains Branch Library Facebook page at
