Whether you are a local, new to town, or just passing through, you have no doubt come across the smiling face of a volunteer hard at work in Hickory Nut Gorge.

Here at the Chamber of Hickory Nut Gorge we fondly refer to these valuable souls as the true ambassadors of tourism, connection, and outreach.

Over the years, we have all opined about just what it is that makes our Gorge communities such a rich bed of volunteerism. Perhaps it is because of the small population of the Gorge, or the seasonality that lends itself to such a strong volunteer spirit. But we like to think that it’s more than that.

We believe it’s the people themselves. We see in them in a number of ways each and every day a genuine willingness to jump in and get involved. We observe that, more often than not, it is motivated by gratefulness for living here, pride in ‘the place,’ and a desire to share it with others.

No matter the reasons, one thing is certain. Quite a few projects and events wouldn’t have been completed, or anywhere near as successful as they have been if not for the bevy of volunteers involved.

Consider for a moment how different any one of these projects, events, or organizations would fare without the heavy involvement of volunteers:

  • The semi-annual Lake Lure Arts & Crafts Festivals
  • The Lake Lure Olympiad
  • The Lake Lure Flowering Bridge
  • The citizen-appointed boards of the Town and Village Municipalities
  • The Chamber of Hickory Nut Gorge Christmas Gala & all of its events committees
  • The annual Dirty Dancing Festival
  • The Hickory Nut Gorge Foundation Community Impact Award
  • ALL of the boards of directors for over 15 different non-profit organizations

If you’re new to the Gorge, here for the summer, or just looking for your next volunteer opportunity, give us a call at the Chamber of Hickory Nut Gorge. We have a long tradition of partnering with all of the non-profit organizations and we can certainly connect you with a myriad of fun and rewarding volunteer projects.
