In partnership with the Town of Lake Lure, Lake Lure Classical Academy held a private drive in Graduation Ceremony for the Class of 2020 on June 4th at Morse Park.
The outdoor ceremony for the twenty-one graduating seniors and their limited number of invited guests was planned in order to comply with Phase II of the restrictions around Covid-19.
Prior to the graduation ceremony, a motorcade led by the Lake Lure Fire Department gave the public a chance to show their support.
Town of Lake Lure Mayor Carol Pritchett gave the opening remarks while School Director Barbara Cohen gave the commencement address.
Assistant School Director Brad White recognized the six seniors who attended LLCA from the beginning: Truman Alton, Matthew Hunter Arrowood, Lauren Hansford, Houston Howell, Naomi Brianne Morris, and Naomi White. Ms. Morris is also 2020 Valedictorian while Ms. White is the Salutatorian.
In her remarks to graduates and guests, Ms. Cohen said the following:
“Over the last few months, we have all had to re-tool and re-imagine news ways of learning, working, and growing together. We had to cancel some of the most important events in a high school student’s career – prom, spring sports, and the senior trip. Yet these students standing before you today are overcomers. They are our future. They are change we want to see in the world. This is not a traditional graduation ceremony any more than it has been a typical year. But that hasn’t stopped you, our LLCA seniors from persevering, remaining positive, and serving as good examples for each other and for the rest of us in what is surely an unprecedented time in our world. You serve to remind us to keep the faith and to keep plugging away regardless of the difficult paths we face. As you graduate, you carry with you our belief in you and our sincere hope that your lives will be deeply rewarding and that you will be able to make your unique mark in the world as only you can.
So today I charge each member of the graduating class of 2020 to rebuild our society, create a more just world, share kindness, treat others with respect, and do not stop learning. Education doesn’t stop after you graduate from high school. Education is the key to changing our society and the future.”
